Flu Prevention Program: It's that time of year. Kids in school, new schedules, and less time for taking care of ourselves makes us more susceptible to the viruses and bacteria that we come in contact with! The following are some simple tips that are the first line defense to preventing colds and flus. ** Wash your hands frequently using warm water and soap, scrubbing all surfaces for about 15-20 seconds. Some flu viruses can live up to two hours on surfaces such as desks, phones and door knobs. ** Avoid touching your face, unless you have clean hands. The eyes, nose and mouth are entry ports for flu viruses. ** Cover your mouth with a disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing. Dispose of tissues and wash your hands immediately. ** Avoid sharing objects (cups, utensils, etc.). Wipe down shared equipment such as phones and keyboards with a natural cleaner. ** Get enough sleep and manage your stress. Lack of sleep and high levels of stress can reduce immune functioning, thus lowering the body’s ability to fend off colds and flu. **Drink more water! Ah... Water is good for so many things! You may not feel as thirsty during fall and winter, but it’s important to make sure you don’t get dehydrated. Consume at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces a day. ** Maintain a moderate exercise program 3-4 days a week. It will strengthen the immune system and increase the body’s natural ability to fight infection. ** Eat healthfully. Remember to eat the recommended 5-9 servings per day of fruits and vegetables. ** Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol can be dehydrating which, in turn, may decrease your resistance. ** Stay warm when the weather turns cold. It is especially important to wear something to cover your neck. If you are not into turtlenecks, wear a scarf every day. In Chinese medicine, the “wind gates” are located at the back of your neck. And, infectious diseases like the flu are often attributed to a “wind invasion.” So, keep those wind gates closed so as not to let the wind invade you. ** Finally, listen to your body. Stay home if you have a fever and are coughing. You will feel better, recover faster if you rest and reduce the risk of infecting others. To participate in SNFW's Flu Prevention Program please call the office to schedule a brief visit to discuss your individual needs. The program is a combination of homeopathic remedies, one of which has been proven in a gold-standard double-blind placebo study to be 88% effective in all age groups at preventing the flu, nutritional supplements, and dietary recommendations aimed at enhancing the immune system and correcting any underlying imbalances that might make you more susceptible to getting the flu! Let's stay healthy this year! We hope you have found this information to be helpful. Our goal is to help our patients find a healthy way in the world. If you have topics you'd like us to address in future blogs please let us know.

Welcome!!

It will include over time, various health topic articles, clinic information, and current goings ons.. Today is day 3 post Hurricane Irene and things are starting to look up. In the aftermath of the hurricane and all the destruction I am amazed and awed by the huge response from friends, strangers, neighbors to get together to help out in their community. Already I am hearing of bridges being restored, roads opening, and in my own little town, I can see the drastic improvement as mud is clearing from people's homes and businesses. I hope all of you stayed dry and safe during this time. NEW EVENTS: THERMOGRAPHY CLINIC: October is Breast Cancer Awareness month!
